28. Jun addresses UN on Sokobanja mine tragedy, Rio Tinto in Serbia and Novak Djokovic
The 28. Jun delegation spent a week at the United Nations in Geneva and addressed the 24th session of the Working Group on Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, the 1st World Youth Assembly and a special session of the Union of Arab Banks.
28. Jun announced an 8.8 million RSD donation to the families of the 8 miners who tragically lost their lives in the Sokobanja accident in April and lobbied for stronger safety regulations in Serbia. It is the largest cash donation the organization paid out at one time in its 10-year history.
Other topics the delegation touched on included the climate change forecast for the region and how to prepare for it, the people-powered removal of Rio Tinto from Serbia and an acknowledgement of Novak Djokovic’s 10 years of support for the organization.
28. Jun is an international humanitarian organization in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Its much-anticipated report for the UN on the environmental picture in the Western Balkans is expected to be released in the near future.
