Jun volunteers, who barely slept during these 5 weeks to make this donation a reality. Lastly, I want to recognize that our government also donated, a slightly smaller amount, to the families in the immediate aftermath of the accident, and we look forward to working with them on strengthening safety regulations in Serbia so that these men did not die in vain.”

Humanitarian of the Year: Luka Jovic

To mark our 10-year anniversary we will be recognizing 10 humanitarians who through their kindness have made the world a better place. After giving our good friend Novak Djokovic the first award, we will stay on the theme of elite global athletes and present the 2nd award to Luka Jovic of Real Madrid. His contribution to the 18 children who lost their fathers in a mining accident in Serbia at the start of the month, propelled one of the largest fundraising drives ever in the region.

Urgent: Support the families of 8 miners killed in Soko coal mine!

Urgent: Support the families of 8 miners killed in Soko coal mine! - 8 1

An accident in Soko coal mine has killed eight miners and wounded 21 others.

The accident occurred at 4 a.m. on Friday when part of the mine collapsed, releasing the methane gas inside and suffocating the miners. Six of those killed are from Aleksinac, one from Vranje, one from Soko Banja. The youngest was only 31 years old and the oldest was 59. All of them left behind dependents; 18 children were made fatherless overnight.

The miners risk their lives for 500 Euros a month because it is twice the average wage in their region. We have confirmed information from workers at the mine that miners complained about the potential risk of methane poisoning for 10 days leading up to this horrific accident. The miners felt the ground shake, and the shift manager said the miners shouldn’t enter the part of the mine that collapsed. Their calls for help were ignored.

What is shocking and adds insult to this tragedy is that there is a full media black out of the story in Serbia because of the election on Sunday. A lot of Serbs only heard about the accident through social media and international media.

Urgent: Support the families of 8 miners killed in Soko coal mine! - 5 1

We are asking you today to donate to help us support the 18 children who woke up today asking for their fathers. These were working-class fathers, sons, and brothers. Risking their lives to support their families. The state media is ignoring their suffering, but we will not. We owe it to these men to be there for their children. Families left behind are grief-stricken and went without any clear explanation why their loved ones were sent to work to be suffocated.

We did it!

Just over a month ago, we shared with you the heartbreaking story of the Arsenijević family from Krusevac. Živadinka is fighting terminal cancer while trying her best to leave her special needs boy, Sladjan, a warm home after she passes away. SRPSKI

With great joy, we want to share with you that TOGETHER, we made their dreams come true! We have moved the family into a warm, clean, fully furnished house until their permanent home is built! Their new home is closer to the hospital where Zivadinka receives cancer treatment and is closer to the special needs school Sladjan attends. To remove any worries for the family, we paid for all the utility bills in advance, stocked the fridge in their new home with food and sanitary supplies, purchased a brand new wardrobe and footwear for each family member and hired a carer to help Zivadinka as she bravely battles cancer. WATCH VIDEO

We are fully committed to helping this family over the long haul, even before the move our volunteers visited the family weekly bringing medicine, food, clothes and sanitary supplies. We are also making a commitment to their community and to the city of Krusevac. Sladjan, being the generous boy that he is, wanted to share his new found joy, so we donated a dozen huge boxes of sweets and toys to his special needs school on his behalf! In addition, we donated a van-full of toys, school supplies, board games, maternity kits and clothes to the Krusevac Red Cross so they can assist more families just like this one!

Friends, most importantly, we showed this family, this community, this city, that they are loved! We showed them they are not forgotten and when one of us gets down, Serbs from all over the world come together to help. Thank you all for your support!.

Humanitarian organization 28. Jun marks International Women's Day with donation to maternity wards - 1

Donation of love to maternity wards

To mark International Women’s Day, humanitarian organization 28. Jun made a sizable donation to maternity wards in Kraljevo and Leskovac which included thousands of specialized medical-grade baby outfits, sleeping gowns for new mothers, complete linen sets for maternity beds and cloth diapers. With this delivery 28. Jun returned to Serbia’s impoverished south and completed a $900,000 project to upgrade Serbia’s hospitals which began with the delivery of an 8-ton container to Clinical Center Nis at the start of the pandemic.

28. Jun Women Director Jelena Obrenovic stated: “To mark our 10th anniversary year, we carefully planned a project which is extremely important to everyone, not just women — the ‘Donacija Ljubavi’ project. With this initiative, we want to draw attention to one of life’s most beautiful moments: when a baby is born and when a woman becomes a mother. Aware of the difficult conditions in maternity wards throughout Serbia, we aim to improve the quality of service during the stay of mothers and newborns in the most neglected hospitals.”

Jun’s program manager Milana Vasic added: “We believe this project to be just the beginning of a larger, awareness-raising movement, which will lead to more security and respect for mothers and their babies. During the month of March, which overlaps International Women’s Day, we seek both public and corporate donations to realize our shared goal of improving Serbia’s maternity wards.

28. Jun awards 5 scholarships!

As many schools and churches celebrated their patron saint – St. Sava, the founder of Serbian schools and education, our organization granted university scholarships to five students with exemplary academic accomplishments. Students received $640 each to help them with costs associated with school. 28. Jun has awarded hundreds of scholarships to primary and secondary students and we are thrilled to include university students this year!
