This is an Elementary School in Serbia in 2022 (Shocking Pictures)

Black mold, no heat, crumbling walls, a roof which can cave in at any moment. These are the conditions in which 16 students from ‘O.Š Bora Stanković’ elementary school near Vranje must try to learn in.

While many of you spent your summer on the coast or in Belgrade, our volunteers have spent their summer in Serbia’s south. These pictures are why…The dying village of Barelić is typical for this region, once boasting a large school with many students, now only 16 remain, forced to study in appalling conditions.

Not for long! We plan to clean up, renovate and equip every student with school supplies, so they too, are given the same opportunity to succeed as their peers in Belgrade and Novi Sad.

We don’t have long before the start of the school year. We are their only hope at a brighter future. Please give generously:

28. Jun increases donation to Sokobanja mine victims to 10 million RSD

We are donating another 1.2 million RSD, in addition to the 8.8 million RSD we have already donated, toward relief of the Sokobanja mine accident. The additional funds will be divided evenly among the 20 surviving miners to assist with their medical expenses. The first 8.8 million RSD was divided among the families of the 8 miners who tragically died. We have also commissioned a memorial mural (pictured above) to be painted in Aleksinac, the hometown of the miners. Our organization will never forget the sacrifice of these men and will continue to support their community in years to come. Thank you to everyone who assisted in this project.

28. Jun will increase the special projects budget from $110,000 to $1 million

Due to an explosion of new donors in the last several months, we have made the decision to significantly increase the money earmarked for our special projects marking our 10-year anniversary. The total will be increased to $1 million from the previous $110,000. Additionally, the project(s) as well as our 10-year anniversary celebrations will be extended to June 28th, 2023. Being volunteer-based, our organization did not use the increase in donations to open new offices, increase salaries or stash the funds for a “rainy day”— all resources are put right back into our communities to help the most needy and support worthwhile projects.

28. Jun begins construction on first Jasenovac memorial Church in Republika Srpska

2022 marks the grim 80th anniversary of the opening of the Jasenovac concentration camp. Many are familiar with the name and associate it with the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), there is a museum, monument and Church in the village. However, unless you’ve been there, you might not know that several camps were located in today’s Republika Srpska, on the Bosnian side of the Sava and Una rivers. This included the infamous Kozara camp which focused on the killing of children, with the oldest victim being just 14 years old.

You might also be surprised, that despite several attempts, there is no Church in the area dedicated to the martyrs of the camp. This is why 28. Jun and our partners will build the first Church in the Banja Luka diocese dedicated to victims of Jasenovac. The foundation of the Church of the Holy Martyrs of Jasenovac in Medjuvodje has received blessing from our Church and work has begun. Please join us in honoring the martyrdom of Serbian men, women and children who perished on these grounds by supporting this important project.

##

We’ve surpassed $10 million in donations!

We have reached an incredible milestone! 28. Jun has donated over $10 million worth of humanitarian aid just one month before our 10th anniversary!

What makes this feat so impressive is that we have done it completely organically. We have never applied for or received a grant from any government, foreign NGO or international bank. Our average donation is slightly over $2 — we are, and have always been, 100% powered by the people!

We have the highest impact per-dollar of any organization operating in the region and we conduct ongoing monitoring to make sure we are the most efficient humanitarian movement out there. Bottom line: we value your hard-earned money and we get all of it to those who need help, fast!

Došli smo do neverovatne prekretnice! Organizacija 28.

28. Jun Opens First Serbian School In Croatia Outside of Vukovar!

Humanitarian organization 28. Jun joined the Naša Kuća association in opening the first Serbian school in Croatia outside of Vukovar today. The school is located in the village of Đevrske near Knin. There 30 students will learn the Serbian language, alphabet, history, culture and traditions. The Deputy Prime Minister of Croatia Anja Šimpraga joined 28. Jun Associate Director Sava Vojnović for the opening of the school.

Our ongoing sustainable development project in Croatia which provides economic stimulus to the Serbian community in Croatia, has surpassed $150,000 USD in investments to date. Last September, his Holiness Patriarch Porfirije joined us in hosting 30 young scholars from Croatia who had been awarded our ‘Nikola Tesla’ scholarships. 28. Jun also supported earthquake relief efforts in Croatia last year.

28. Jun donates 8.8 million RSD to families of fallen miners

40 days after the tragedy at the Sokobanja mine, international humanitarian organization 28. Jun announced the donation of 8.8 million RSD to the families of the 8 miners who tragically lost their lives on April 1st. The organization revealed the amount donated at the 1st World Youth Assembly at the United Nations in Geneva, while calling for stronger safety regulations in Serbia’s mines. It is the largest cash donation the organization paid out at one time in its 10-year history.

Serbs from all over the world of sport showed their support, led by world no. 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic, Luka Jovic of LaLiga’s Real Mardid, Bogdan Bogdanovic of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, and Milan Lucic of the NHL’s Calgary Flames. Joining Polygon co-founder Mihailo Bjelic from the tech world, the region’s leading Twitch streamer Nikola “Nikolarn” Anicic also contributed. From the world of entertainment, Hollywood film producer Gordon Bijelonic, film director and activist Boris Malagurski, musician Mihajlo “Voyage” Veruovic, singer and humanitarian Danica Karic and supermodel Sofija Milosevic lent their support as well.

28. Jun president and founder Filip Filipi stated: “I want to thank everyone who supported this project, starting with the Serbian people and their overwhelming response through donations, shares, and encouragement. I want to thank our celebrities from sport to entertainment and tech, who came together and showed these families they are not alone. I wanted to thank our 28. Jun volunteers, who barely slept during these 5 weeks to make this donation a reality. Lastly, I want to recognize that our government also donated, a slightly smaller amount, to the families in the immediate aftermath of the accident, and we look forward to working with them on strengthening safety regulations in Serbia so that these men did not die in vain.”

28. Jun is an international humanitarian organization in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Since 2012, they have delivered 235 tons of humanitarian, medical, and disaster relief aid worth over $10 million to the Western Balkans. Their much-anticipated report for the UN on the environmental picture in the region, which will include recommendations on worker safety in the mining industry, is expected to be released in the near future.

Humanitarian of the Year: Luka Jovic

To mark our 10-year anniversary we will be recognizing 10 humanitarians who through their kindness have made the world a better place. After giving our good friend Novak Djokovic the first award, we will stay on the theme of elite global athletes and present the 2nd award to Luka Jovic of Real Madrid. His contribution to the 18 children who lost their fathers in a mining accident in Serbia at the start of the month, propelled one of the largest fundraising drives ever in the region.

Хвала ти Лука!

Humanitarian of the Decade: Novak Djokovic

Jelena & Novak Djokovic have embodied positive Serbian values — humanitarianism, courage, class — for over a decade through their charitable work, sacrifice and family values. We also want to recognize and honor the incredible work of the entire team at the Novak Djokovic Foundation. We look forward to another 10 years of working together to make Serbia better for all.

Congratulations and thank you!
